The Crash Of The Gaming Industry In Reno, Nevada

Although Reno, Nevada was the gambling capital of the United States before the 1960s, the rapid expansion and growth of Las Vegas has caused a severe downturn in the Reno gaming industry. Added to Reno’s troubles are also the high rate of growth in California’s Indian gaming sector, while American Airlines’ buyout of Reno Air caused the area to become downgraded to an airport ‘spoke’ rather than a central hub ? meaning that fewer and fewer people would be directed to Reno on their regular flight path.

Since American Airlines’ complete disposal of the Reno Air fleet in 2001, many old casinos in the city have been either closed or torn down. Famous names such as the Mapes, Harold’s Club, Nevada Club, and Palace Club are now only empty lots, while smaller casinos such as the Riverboat, King’s Inn, Golden Phoenix, Cornstock, Virginian, Money Tree, and the Sundowner exist only in memory ? abandoned buildings rest where a bustling swath of casinos once cut their way through the center of town.

There are currently only two local casinos which have experienced any amount of significant growth, and these are the Atlantis Casino and The Peppermill. In 2005, the Peppermill began a $300-million expansion project on their hotel, intending to create a Tuscan-style atmosphere and theme ? including such things as a 600-room hotel tower completely composed of suites, as well as a resort-style pool complex, restaurants, lounges, and 62,000 sq.ft. of convention space. In fact, the Peppermill was also named the most outstanding Reno gaming property by both Nevada and Casino Player magazines.

Fortunately for the area, although gaming has certainly decreased, the city has moved toward holding larger events throughout the course of the year, which have been received with great success. Events such as the classic car convention and rally called ‘Hot August Nights’, as well as an annual ‘Great Reno Balloon Race’ each September, have greatly increased tourism to the area and has seen a move toward revitalization of Reno’s downtown. The city is slowly becoming friendlier to tourists, and it is hoped that this trend will continue as Reno’s annual events grow even larger each year.

The Jamahkiri Resort & Spa Koh Tao In Thailand Is Worth Checking Out

After checking out all the websites we could find of places on Koh Tao, there was one place that we really liked the look of, and that was the Jamahkiri Resort & Spa, but what clinched it for us, was a friend of a friend who had stayed there, and said it was fabulous.

What we found was a very plush resort, with everything you could ask for in a bigger resort, just kind of scaled down.

It overlooks the beautiful Shark Bay, and the Jamahkiri could best be described as a treasure. It is totally isolated and the bay it is itself in, is quite unspoilt. The room was everything we hoped it would be, in a pavilion style, with Thai décor, with spa-bath, flat screen TV, DVD player, safe, and neat balcony overlooking the bay.

Most importantly the bed was comfortable, with the kind of linen sheets that just feels quality!!
Although there is no beach as such, there is a pier, and you can snorkel here, the snorkelling isn’t bad at all, or take a kayak and go exploring.

If you want to go diving, then a short walk along the shore to the next cove will bring you to three or four diving schools.

The food in the restaurant was excellent, if a little limited, and the service from the staff extremely good indeed,.

The spa with good reason is rated the best on the island, so altogether a very relaxing place, but your leg muscles will need to be good, because of the walking up and down you will do.

We would certainly recommend the Jamhakiri Resort & Spa as a honeymoon destination, and for couples but not enough for families with small children.

Please however be aware that The Jamahkiri Resort & Spa is only really accessible why four wheel drive vehicles, and if you want to eat out in town, then it’s free to get there but the last free lift back is 8.30pm, and it is a very bumpy twenty minute ride down what is no more than a track.

This isolation, whilst it is attractive, you do need to escape in the evenings because the dinner menu becomes repetitive.

The Key To Traveling On A Budget

People often have the misconception that they should not travel when they are on a tight budget. In reality, many smart travelers travel to distant destinations on a budget and they are able to do it regularly. When you travel on a budget and know all the tricks to doing so successfully, the experience can be quite rewarding knowing that you’ve saved yourself the money that you could save for your next budget trip.

Traveling on a budget can be considered as a form of art that requires more than bargaining. One of the ways to begin planning for a wallet-friendly trip is to check out last minute deals on the internet. In this day and age, the internet shopping has become so common for everything ranging from fresh-cut flowers to designer purses to cars. Needless to say, just like shopping at the local department store, it requires some bargain hunting to some degree. Websites such as www.dealenvy.com offers great bargains for everyday items that I always seem to have a need for. Same goes for shopping for the cheapest deal online for airfare. There are countless travel websites that you can do price comparisons for. Next, is to find out from foreign locals where the cheapest lodgings and eateries are. The dollars and pennies saved from this surely will add up to big savings and a fuller wallet. While traveling to certain countries, such as countries in Asia, learn the art of bargaining with vendors! Even locals bargain on an everyday basis so why not try? Small souvenirs, snacks, anything can be bargained for at some places! In America, bargaining is usually found in places such as Chinatown or local swap meets, but it is not typically an everyday interaction.

Bargain travelers need to understand that in some countries, everything, even the most minuscule thing, can be negotiable. One trick to bargaining successfully is to pretend to walk away! This may be difficult at first but pretend! More so than not, the vendor will give in and the price will be lowered to your desired amount. Some people even find bargaining a fun interaction between them and the vendors. It does not hurt to give it a try it because you have nothing to lose!

The Climate In Baltimore, Maryland

Baltimore is located in the north central part of Maryland on the Patapsco River just a short distance from the Chesapeake Bay. Low hills are on the western and northern parts of Baltimore.

Hundreds of species of trees thrive in Baltimore’s climate; they include:

?White oak
?Southern live oak
?Maple
?Bradford pear
?Poplar
?Southern magnolia
?Crape myrtle
?Palms

The Baltimore-Washington Metropolitan Area is the 4th largest combined statistical area in the United States. The Baltimore-Towson Metropolitan Statistical Area is the 19th largest MSA.

The climate in Baltimore is humid subtropical according to the Koppen classification. The ocean influences the climate of Baltimore somewhat. Baltimore gets rather hot, humid summers and cool, moist winters.

The hottest month of the year is typically July with an average high temperature of 91 degrees F and an average low of 73 degrees F. Summer is a season of very high humidity in the Baltimore area with frequent afternoon thunderstorms. The record high for Baltimore is 108 degrees F set n 1985.

January is the coldest month having an average high of 44 degrees F and an average low of 29 degrees F. Winter warm fronts often bring brief periods of spring like weather and Arctic fronts can drop nighttime low temperatures into the teens. The record low temperature for Baltimore is -7 degrees F set in 1934.

Interesting enough, Baltimore rarely experiences temperatures below 10 degrees F or above 100 degrees F. The Baltimore metro area is usually several degrees cooler than the city and the coastal towns due to an urban heat island effect in the city proper and a moderating effect of the Chesapeake Bay.

Baltimore is typical for receiving generous amounts of precipitation as are most East Coast cities. The precipitation is usually very evenly spread throughout the year. Spring, summer and fall bring frequent showers and thunderstorms.

Baltimore experiences light to moderate snowfall in the winter.

In northern and western suburbs, the climate transitions to a continental, therefore, winter snowfall amounts are usually higher. Freezing rain also occurs a few times each winter in Baltimore. However, major ice storms are very rare in Baltimore, Maryland.

Baltimore, Maryland lies in between two physical features that protect it from extreme weather and accounts for the relatively tempered seasons. The Appalachian Mountains protect central Maryland from a lot of the harsh northern winds and accompanying lake effect weather that bring subfreezing temperatures and heavy snows to the Great lakes region. The Delmarva Peninsula protects Baltimore, Maryland from many of the tropical storms that affect the immediate coast.

Average Monthly Temperatures for Baltimore, Maryland are:

?January: High is 44 and Low is 29
?February: High is 47 and Low is 31
?March: High is 57 and Low is 39
?April: High is 68 and Low is 48
?May: High is 77 and Low is 58
?June: High is 86 and Low is 68
?July: High is 91 and Low is 73
?August: High is 88 and Low is 71
?September: High is 81 and Low is 64
?October: High is 70 and Low is 52
?November: High is 59 and Low is 42
?December: High is 49 and Low is 33

As you can see the climate in Baltimore, Maryland is one almost anyone can live with, not too extreme in heat or cold, rain, ice and snow or horrible, tropical storms.

The New Tibet Railway – An Affordable Trip Across The Roof Of The World

The Siberian Express across Russia to Moscow has been described as the best train ride in the world. Maybe not anymore. The Tibetan Railway from Qinghai to Lhasa has thrown its hat in the ring. It will eventually be extended to the Nepalese border, only an hour’s drive from Kathmandu.

Some things you might want to think about before boarding:

Price: Tibetan Railway tickets are CHEAP, ranging from US$49 to $180 depending on how much comfort you require and where you’re coming from. A soft sleeper from Beijing, a 48 hour journey, cost only $158 in early 2007. Although a travel agency might charge more than that, the frugal can purchase a ticket directly from the station.

Visas: A China visa is of course necessary. Contrary to some information on the Internet, though, a Tibet Permit is also required for foreigners. They are relatively inexpensive and not difficult to obtain, and can be arranged through a travel agency.

Altitude Sickness: Tibet is often called the “roof of the world”, and the Tibetan Railway is the world’s highest altitude railway. Nearly 1,000 kilometers of track have been laid at over 4,000 meters (12,000 feet) above sea level, and Tanggula Station, at 5,068 meters (over 15,000 feet) above sea level, is the highest railway station in the world at. Lhasa sits on a high desert plateau. Accordingly, altitude sickness is a very real danger. Fortunately the gradual acclimatization of going by rail rather than by air reduces this risk substantially. I flew to Lhasa from Chengdu in 1994 and got altitude sickness from my first breath of Tibetan air. I stayed that way for the rest of the trip, and then spent the next 10 years wanting to go again, because it was worth every single minute of discomfort. Be warned, however ? extreme altitude sickness can be life-threatening, and the only treatment is to get to a lower altitude as soon as possible. Accordingly, a trip to Tibet may not be appropriate for the elderly, the infirm, and people with lung ailments.

The Many Benefits Of Learning French

Why Learn to Speak French?

French is the second most taught language in the world only after English. French as well as English is the official working language of the International Red Cross, NATO, the United Nations, the International Olympic Committee and many other International Organizations. And France was the United States first ally.

There is no secret to learning a new foreign language. It requires a commitment to daily practice, energy and patience. French is a difficult language to learn because many sounds are very different from English. French pronunciation is very tricky because there are a lot of silent letters and it uses nasal sounds which we do not use in English.

The Best Ways To Learn French

The best way to learn to learn French is to travel to France and study at a language school. That is the total immersion method and the most effective to quickly learn French. When you are in France then you must speak French throughout the course of your day.

Thee next best option to learn French would be to take a class at your local community college. It should be taught by a native speaker and you will make new friends and you will learn to correctly pronounce the new sounds that go along with learning French. Another great option is on line French lessons if you can commit to be tied to your computer for an hour each day. The most flexible way to learn French is an audio course. By having the lessons on CD or in MP3 files you can take them along in your personal CD or MP3 player and practice while driving, working out or walking. The down side to this method is that you still need to find a French speaker to practice with. Some courses mainly focus on vocabulary and grammar. If you want to learn French you really need to start speaking it right away.

Quick Tips On Practicing French

Check if your local community college has a French club then you could have other French speakers to practice with on a weekly basis. You could also see if any members of your church speak French and ask them out for lunch or coffee and practice with them.

Buy or rent French films. By hearing the language you quickly become familiar with the different sounds that you will need to be learning anyway. Listen to French audio lessons daily.

The COSTA Las Vegas Manhattan – Does Not COST A Lot

Why does everyone look forward to a holiday in summer and not the autumn when the weather is damp dismal and gloomy? Why not winter when freezing weather conditions prevents us from leaving the home? Why do people leave a summer behind to go abroad on holiday when all the flowers and bud cascading blossoms are in bloom. Why when the birds sing? Well let me tell you, people have waited all year round scrimping to save to give the family a holiday but due to work commitments and kiddies schooling people are forced to travel when the system says so.

Okay so our options are zilch on when we travel but what the system has no say on is what we leave behind and that is all our cares and woes.

A fortnight away on holiday lies ahead, two weeks of pure relaxation, eating, drinking, partying, dancing, golfing and sailing. The sheer thought of sunbathing on a hot sun kissed beach toned to a perfect bronze is a fabulous way of forgetting all your troubles even if only for a short while.

Kiddies clubs scattered all over with fully trained staff to keep the children out of harms way and happy. Just like the water and theme parks. Appetizing gourmet meals served up daily to suit every palette. Fast food outlets dishing up french fries and burger smothered with lashings of ketchup. Steaming red hot lobster shrimp and crab eaten while over looking the azure ocean. A chilled cocktail sipped while the romantic setting of the evening sunset disappears.

Dancing till dawn can take its toll increasing the yearning for the tranquillity of secluded coves. Peace and quiet can be found all over especially on the well maintained golf courses. Hotel staff offer top quality service, comfort is first and foremost on their list of duties while attending to your needs. Hospitality and history of their native culture is shared with you if asked.

Nightly sing along sessions with famous faces and karaoke for all those who love to take their voices to the extreme. Water sport activities for the fast and furious who want a piece of the action, all this surrounded by the most beautiful scenery. A definite feel of Manhattan comes through strong with the stream line of hotels that run along the palm tree promenade. The glitzy colourful neon lights brighten up the skies; eat your heart out Las Vegas and not forgetting their very own Monte Carlo area with its casino. If nightlife is what you seek then put Ibiza on hold.

None of the above tickles your fancy then surely a night at the palace may just do the trick. The tricky part is where to look for a holiday that has worldwide destinations included in the price.

Where is this palace you speak of. In BENIDORM of course?

The Luxor Hotel & Casino In Las Vegas Is Undergoing A Transformation ? And Its Not About Ancient Egypt Any Longer

When the Luxor opened on October 15, 1993 the striking pyramid structure was the tallest building in Las Vegas. The pyramid could be seen for miles and made the other hotels on the Strip look small in comparison. This was a time when the development of casinos in Las Vegas relied on themes to differentiate themselves from one another. The Steve Wynn hotel, Treasure Island, was based on a pirate theme and second incarnation of MGM Grand (the original MGM Grand was what is now known as Bally’s) was all about the movies, complete with a yellow brick road directing visitors through the center of the casino floor.

The Luxor, as the name suggests, relied on the ancient Egypt theme to tantalize it’s guests. The replica of the Sphinx in front of the hotel, which also doubles as the porte-cochere, greets visitors upon arrival. At one time there was even a Nile River ride, similar to what you might find in Epcot Center at Disneyworld. The Luxor may not have been considered one of the seven wonders of the world, but at the time it was definitely considered the wonder of Las Vegas.

Times and taste change very fast in Las Vegas and today the Luxor is going through a transformation that promises to bring a more contemporary flavor and erase any sign that the hotel and casino are 18 years old. This transformation began in 2006, with the refurbishment of the West Tower rooms, and will continue through 2008. All 4,047 rooms will be refurbished by the time the renovation is complete.

Gone is the RA Nightclub. RA was one of the first mega-nightclubs in Las Vegas. The Luxor is now home to the LAX Nightclub, a branch of the Los Angeles hot spot. LAX is a modern state-of-the-art nightclub covering two-stories and 26,000 square feet. Since the club was opened in August 2007 it has developed a reputation for being a celebrity hangout. There is also Noir Bar, a private reservation required bar located within the nightclub. An adjoining bistro will be opening soon so you can eat, drink and play in a singular destination.

Although the Nile River ride is no longer, the Luxor still has many entertainment offerings. The comedian Carrot Top offers his unique and somewhat twisted form of entertainment 6-nights a week. The adults-only revue, Fantasy, offers singing, dancing and of course, topless girls. Something the whole family can enjoy is the ventriloquist Ronn Lucas and his puppets who perform afternoon shows 6-days a week. In 2008 the Luxor will be home to yet another Cirque du Soleil production on the Las Vegas Strip. This production will be a collaboration with magician Criss Angel and will be housed in the theater formerly occupied by the Blue Man Group.

The Luxor’s parent company, MGM MIRAGE is spending $300 million dollars in an effort to bring the hotel in line with the newer resorts and casinos on the Strip, which was very much needed. As the transformation continues there will surely be new restaurants added, new bars and nightclubs and new entertainment options. And as the ancient Egypt theme slowly disappears during this renovation, it is beginning to look like the only reference to the old Luxor that will remain is it’s signature 30-story pyramid tower.

The Gaylord Opryland Hotel

One of the most famous landmarks in Nashville, Tennessee is the Opryland country music theatre. Very few realize that a hotel close by is, in its own right, a tourist attraction as well as a luxurious place to stay. The Gaylord Opryland Hotel is a magnificent 2,881 room hotel, offering much more than your average accommodations. Many come to visit for the day, paying only a nominal valet parking fee without ever stepping foot in any of the elegant rooms.

As you walk into the building, you immediately notice the beauty surrounding you. A round reception desk greets you, with maps of the hotel. Yes, maps are needed, as the hotel is divided into many portions, each more beautiful than the last, their décor chosen for beauty as well as functionality. Peace descends as the ambience of the hotel soaks into your senses. Even the ceiling above the reception desk is a delight, the mosaic tiles giving a timeless beauty to the pattern.

The sight beyond the reception area will awe you. Lush greenery, cascading waterfalls, and exotic flowers can all be found under the 15-foot high glass atrium ceiling. There are paths meandering along the rivers, one even going into a tunnel, where you can look out from behind a waterfall, giving you a unique view. Beyond that, a catwalk is suspended above the gardens, lending a completely different perspective to the viewer. Even more unique is the Delta Flatboat tour, where the entire family can relax, as they drift serenely along the river, enjoying the water plants and waterfalls that glisten in the sunlight.

If the nine acres of outdoors, brought to life indoors, are not enough to delight, the Gaylord Opryland Hotel also boasts over 30 specialty shops, restaurants and lounges, allowing you the convenience of shopping and eating without ever leaving the premises, along with a laser light and fountain show. Sure to enchant children and adults alike, the dancing water fountain show is a source of entertainment few expect from a hotel, but then the Gaylord Opryland Hotel is not typical of any other hotel in the world. As if all of this was not enough, they also offer childcare services, and even a video game room to occupy the minds of any age. The hotel is in itself a vacation destination that will be truly memorable for years to come.

Brief History Of Cornwall & Devon

The first remains of a basic society in Cornwall dates back to 4500 BC ? primative stone tools have been found from this era indicating the existence of a settlement (in a town called Redruth).

Cornwall saw an “invasion” from the Celts during 1000 BC ? the Celts were warriors from Europe and were largely the ancestors of current day Cornish folk.

Devon is believed by many historians to be one of the very first places in England to have settlers. Indeed, Dartmoor (a National Park in the centre of Devon) still offers a lot of prehistoric sites of interest. Further it’s from Plymouth that the Pilgrim Fathers first set sail to the Americas ? and also where Sir Francis Drake went off to battle the Spanish Armada.

Dartmoor also is home to some of the oldest structures in England ? primitive buildings & remains include stone circles, burial mounds and ancient settlements.

While the Roman invasion of Britain left Cornwall largely untouched the same cannot be said of Devon. The Romans took over much of current day Devon – including a port at Topsham and a legion at Exeter.

The Romans were no longer controlling Devon by around 400 and by 800 it had fallen under the rule of Wessex (King Egbert).

During the 14th & 15th century, Devon was under serious threat from the French who raided the Devon coastline.

Food & Drink In Cornwall ? Great Pubs, Good Food And Drink!

It’s true that the Cornish enjoy their food ? so much so that Cornwall & Devon are known almost as much for their culinary offerings as their stunning scenery and coasts.

The famous Cornish Pasty is just one of the local edible treats available in this charming English county. The Cornish pasty is a tasty puff pastry that’s stuffed with beef steak (or mince), onions, potatoes and seasoned with pepper. It must be tried (assuming you’re not a vegetarian) at least once during your visit to Cornwall.

Famous starters include Kiddly Broth, a soup made with onions, bacon and hard bread as well as nettle soup (yes, it’s made from real nettles).

Fish & Chips is a famous English dish ? however, the Cornish use beer to make theirs and it certainly makes for an interesting variation of standard fish and chips.

Star Gazy Pie is a pastry made with pilchards (herring or mackerel can also be used), boiled eggs, bacon, onions and white wine.

Fancy something sweet? Cornish sweets include Cornish Cherry Choclets (a mix of chocolate, syrup, cherries and butter), Cornish Splits (made from sugar, milk, flour and lard) and Figgy ‘obbin (a baked treat consisting of raisins, milk, sugar and flour).

As you’d probably expect by now the Cornish also have their own signature drinks. These include Aunt Ellys Nog (a mix of eggs, cream, vanilla, sugar and milk), Cornish Mine Punch (rum, brandy, lemons and sugar) and Cornish Spiced Mead.

Other foods that Cornwall is known for are the rich Cornish fudge and ice cream and Cornish Hevva Cake.

Weather In Devon & Cornwall ? When To Go

While Cornwall and Devon enjoys some of the mildest weather anywhere in the UK, summer-time still remains the peak time to visit.

Cornwall experiences the mildest winters in Great Britain ? rarely does it snow in winter and summer days tend to be wonderfully warm and sunny.

In Cornwall, May is a very good time to visit, and all months up to July enjoy around seven hours of sunshine a day.

The Obby Oss Summer Ceremony In Cornwall

If you happen to visit Cornwall during May Day then a visit to Padstow is highly recommended to witness the all but mad event of Obby Oss. This strange ceremony is performed every year in order to “welcome summer” (something that perhaps the rest of Britain should consider).

During this colourful and noisy procession, two large masks representing horses are paraded through the town accompanied by musicians playing the “Obby Oss May Song”.
